Understand a number
Targets, EPA ratings, NRCan and savings
Targets are the EPA ratings from fueleconomy.gov for a vehicle picked from the EPA list; for one typed in, or once you change a rating it gave, the ratings you type are your targets, and the app calls them that, never the EPA’s.
Targets and savings
Savings compare what the same distance would have cost in another car (set per vehicle; 27.0 MPG average new car by default) at the prices you paid.
Against the rating
Your average shows as a percentage of the rating (“96% of your target”). In L/100 km, kWh/100 km or kg/100 km, where a lower figure is better, it’s said as the fuel or energy you use against it instead: “4% more fuel than your target (5.4 L/100 km)”, and within half a percent “about your target”. So is an electric car’s beside its label’s kWh/100 mi.
NRCan, in Canada
In Canada (Settings → Region), Natural Resources Canada’s official rating (NRCan) shows beside the EPA’s: on the Garage card, in Stats and in the vehicle form. It’s for reference: targets and percentages stay on the EPA ratings.
In the vehicle form you pick your version when several fit or NRCan names it differently (“Civic Sedan” for the EPA’s “Civic 4Dr”), by year, make, model, drivetrain and engine. A rating shows by itself only under the same name, and nothing shows when none can be matched.
