How fuel economy is measured

Miles between full fill-ups divided by all the fuel added in between. Partial fill-ups fold into the next full tank. This is more accurate than the car’s dash, which usually reads a few percent high.

The full-tank method Always on the odometer, from one full fill-up to the next, partial ones folded in.

Where a log starts

A new car delivered with a full tank starts at 0 miles. For any other vehicle, the first full fill-up is the starting point: it’s shown in the log, and its fuel is left out of fuel economy and cost per mile, since that fuel was burned before logging began.

What you paid still counts in your spending. Miles driven doesn’t wait for it: it runs from the first odometer reading of any kind.
