Understand a number

Stats: categories, ranges, deeper charts

Pick a category and a range (1W … All); each range is compared with the same stretch just before it. Drag across a chart to read any point.

Reading the charts

Drag across a chart to read any point. Most charts say in a line what they show. Overview’s distance is your miles driven (What counts in miles driven?, above). Places shows each station’s, city’s and state’s flag beside its name, as the station pages do.

Fuel economy

Every tank with your 5-tank average and, for one vehicle, each season.

Plus adds, for one vehicle (not a plug-in hybrid), your tanks at a glance, how they spread, each month, short and long tanks and busy and quiet stretches.

For one vehicle or several it adds By outside temperature: each tank’s average outside temperature over its days, where you filled up. Each day takes the place of the fill-up nearest to it that has a map position. The tanks fall in five bands (below 32°F, 32–45°F, 45–60°F, 60–80°F, 80°F and over; °F with miles and US MPG, °C otherwise).

A band’s MPG is its miles over its fuel; with several vehicles, each tank is measured against its own vehicle’s average. Plug-in hybrids are left out, since their MPG at the pump counts electric miles.

The weather

The temperatures come from NASA’s POWER project (power.larc.nasa.gov), which publishes each day a few days later, only after you tap Look up the weather on the card, and are kept on the phone: each place and day is looked up once. Stop looking up the weather, at the foot of the card, turns it off.

Habits

Stats → Habits: when you fill up and when you charge. Habits and Emissions come with Plus.

  • Fill-up habits: the part of the day and the hour (from fill-ups with a time), the day of the week, the season, the month of the year, each month and each year, counting every fill-up, the first one too.
  • Charging habits, for a plug-in hybrid or an electric car: the part of the day, the hour and the weekday, in sessions or kWh. With time-of-use periods in your home rate, it shows how much of your home charging was off-peak (see Where and when you charge).

A plug-in hybrid has both, an electric car Charging habits alone. With several vehicles, each section counts the ones with that kind of entry and names them when it isn’t all of them; a section with nothing in the range says so.

Emissions

Stats → Emissions: the CO₂ your driving puts out, by month and by vehicle.

It counts the gas and diesel you bought, at the EPA’s factors, and your charging at the grid’s factor (the US average unless you set your own in Settings → Display). It sets that against an average new car and the EPA’s typical car over the same miles.

Tailpipe and power plant only: making the fuel, the power and the car isn’t counted, and a hydrogen car has none at the tailpipe. Settings → Display → Emissions turns the category off.
