Tires

PlusPart of Plus

Each set’s distance, tread wear and rotations, and when it reaches the legal minimum. Garage → Edit → Tires & tread adds a set.

Sets and swaps

Garage → Edit → Tires & tread (or open a maintenance visit with New tires and tap Track these tires). Add each set: its brand and model and, if you like, its size, when you bought it and the price (or the visit it came from).

Put a set on at a date and odometer. With summer and winter tires, Swap sets takes one off and puts the other on, so each set counts only its own miles, from your odometer readings (a swap without an odometer is placed on the readings around its day).

Tread readings

Now and then, add a tread reading: the shallowest groove of the most worn tire, in 32nds of an inch, with a tread gauge.

From the readings (and the depth when new, if you add it) MileWorks works out how fast the set wears per 1,000 mi, and how far it has left to the legal minimum. In most US states that’s 2/32 in (a few set another, or none: check yours).

For the set on the car, it says about when, at your usual pace.

With a price, it shows what they cost a mile so far and over their life.

Measure each tire, and the reading keeps all four (and the spare): its depth is the shallowest on the road. Tires 2/32 or more apart side to side on an axle are worth an alignment check; the fronts and rears that far apart, a rotation.

The spec, for the next set

Each set keeps its size as the sidewall prints it, with the load index and speed rating after it (225/45R17 94W), what it’s made for (all-season, winter…), its DOT code, its UTQG and its maximum pressure.

The DOT code’s last four figures are the week and year it was made (2423: week 24 of 2023); from 5 years old many tire makers advise a yearly check, and replacing by 10.

The door placard (the sticker in the driver’s door jamb) keeps the sizes and cold pressures the car was built for.

With them, the set on the car says what new tires must match: the size, and the load index and speed rating or higher.

In the phone app, Photo of the sidewall (or Read a photo) keeps the photo with the set and reads what it can: the maker, the size, the DOT code, UTQG and the maximum pressure, on a card to use or not. Raised letters read best close up, in light from the side. The door placard reads the same way (its photo isn’t kept).

Rotations and the reminder

Rotations are your maintenance visits with Tire rotation while the set was on. The Garage card shows the set on the car, and the Maintenance due reminder (Settings → Alerts) also comes when it’s about 1,000 miles from the minimum.

Below Plus, the sets already tracked, their periods and readings stay readable.
