Rental cars

PlusPart of Plus

A car hired for a trip: its fuel, costs and distance from pickup to return. Add it in the Garage with its pickup, and tap Return on its card when you hand it back.

Adding one

Garage → Add vehicle, then A rental under Whose car is it? (or Add a rental, under Garage → Rental Vehicles). Pick the car as you would any other, then:

  • The company (optional).
  • Where you picked it up: the region chooser (Use where I am fills it in when the maps can tell, and nothing is guessed).
  • The date, time and odometer at pickup, and whether it came full.
  • When it’s due back (optional).

Condition photos

Condition photos: take some at pickup (each side, the dash, any scratch) under Condition photos at pickup, and more when you hand it back, on its Return.

Its card in the Garage shows how many, with their dates, and opens them. They stay on your phone with the pickup and the return; a backup notes how many, as it does every entry’s photos.

Its odometer, units and currency

Its odometer reads in the pickup country’s unit (km for a car from Canada or Europe, miles from the US or the UK): change Its odometer reads if its dash says otherwise. Every odometer you type for it is in that unit, and its tickets, forms and the mileage log show it so, naming the unit where it isn’t yours.

Its fill-ups start in the pickup country’s pump unit and currency, and its charging in that currency, when the station’s address doesn’t say otherwise.

Picked up full, its fuel economy is measured from the pickup; else from its first full fill-up.

While it’s out, and Return

While it’s out, new entries go on it unless you pick another vehicle, and an expense starts as Rental & fees, for what the company charges (a refund works as for any expense).

With the automatic region (Plus), the pickup counts as where you are, as a border crossing does: picked up in another country or state, the Dash welcomes you there. While it’s out, only its entries and border crossings move the region: another car’s fill-up logged meanwhile doesn’t.

Return on its card takes the date, time and odometer you handed it back at. History marks its entries, and they stay there, in Stats, the Passbook and every export, but new entries no longer offer it. The region goes back to your other vehicles’ newest place (the Dash says “Welcome back” when that’s another country or state).

Undo return puts it back out (a return with photos or notes stays in History as an odometer reading, so they’re kept). Moved there? never counts a rental’s entries: a week in a hired car is a trip.

What it hasn’t got

A rental has no loan, value or depreciation, tires, maintenance due, renewal reminders or history for a buyer; its rental agreement and other papers can be kept. While it’s out, missed fill-ups and fuel economy drops are watched as for your own cars; once it’s returned, they aren’t.

Its business miles get no rate per mile (the IRS’s, CRA’s or your own: they’re for a car you own or lease); the tax package and the reimbursement report list its costs’ business share instead. Gig work counts its costs in its cost per mile.

A rental never takes one of Lite’s 2 places, and one still out stays in use after a subscription ends, so you can finish and return it. There’s no Settle up on a rental: the company bills it, and its charges go in as Rental & fees.
