Borrowed cars

PlusPart of Plus

Someone else’s car for a while: its fuel, costs and distance, and what you owe its owner. It works as a rental does, with Settle up for what you agreed to pay.

Adding one

Garage → Add vehicle, then Borrowed under Whose car is it? (or Add a borrowed car, under Garage → Borrowed Vehicles).

Pick the car, then whose it is (optional, “Mom’s car”: it stays on your phone), where and when you picked it up, its odometer then and whether it came full, as for a rental, and when it goes back (optional). It sits under Borrowed Vehicles, open by itself while one is out.

As a rental

Everything else works as a rental’s:

  • Its own odometer unit.
  • The region following it where you picked it up and handed back on Return (with the automatic region, Plus); Moved there? never counts it.
  • No loan, value, tires, recalls, maintenance due or history for a buyer, and never one of Lite’s 2 places.

Maintenance you pay for on it is logged and counts in your costs. History marks its entries (“Corolla, borrowed”).

Settle up

Settle up (optional, under Settle up on its form): what you agreed to pay its owner, in one currency (yours unless you pick another). Any of:

  • A flat amount, once, a week or a month.
  • A share of their insurance a month.
  • A rate per mile or km, as its odometer reads.

It counts by the day from the pickup, at least one: a week is 7 days, a month runs to the same day next month, and a part of one counts its share of that month’s days.

Its card shows what’s owed so far; Return opens Settle up with each part, what you’ve paid its owner (expenses logged as Paid to the owner) taken off, and Record payment, which logs the next one.

The fuel and charging you bought are listed apart: you paid for them at the pump, so they aren’t in what’s owed. Each line is rounded to the cent (in a currency without cents, such as the yen or the won, to a whole one).

Photos and tax

Condition photos at pickup and at return, as a rental’s.

For tax, a borrowed car is a rental: no standard mileage rate or CRA allowance (they’re for a car you own or lease), its costs at their business share instead, what you paid its owner among them. In Mexico, a payment for its use counts as a lease’s does, with its owner’s CFDI.
